The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Cochin chapter is raising concern over low adult uptake of vaccines such as influenza, hepatitis A, and pneumonia amid a rise in communicable diseases in Kerala. IMA leaders emphasize that adults—especially those with comorbidities like diabetes or heart conditions—should prioritize immunization to prevent complications.
They note the lack of inclusion of many of these vaccines in the state’s universal immunization program, requiring individuals to pay out-of-pocket. This has led to avoidable illnesses among vulnerable groups.
The IMA recommends increased public awareness campaigns, affordable access schemes, and inclusion of adult vaccination in broader health policy to reduce the burden of preventable diseases.
