Government to Tighten Claims Portal Oversight to Curb Medical Costs

India intends to assign the Finance Ministry and IRDAI direct control over its National Health Claims Exchange. This move is intended to curb rapidly rising healthcare costs, projected to increase by 13% in 2025—well above the global average of 10.

Analysis by government and regulators found hospitals inflating treatment rates and disproportionately charging patients with higher insurance coverage, leading insurers to raise premiums. Tightened control aims to standardize treatment tariffs, reduce overcharging, and maintain affordability of coverage.

Greater regulatory oversight of claims processing is expected to improve transparency and balance in insurer-provider dynamics, potentially slowing the rise of premiums and alleviating financial burden on patients.
