Gujarat Ranks Third in National SickleCell Disease Burden

As of July 2025, Gujarat reported a total of 28,178 sicklecell disease (SCD) cases, making it third among Indian states. Odisha and Madhya Pradesh hold the top two spots with 96,484 and 30,762 cases respectively. Notably, 90% of Gujarat’s patients belong to Scheduled Tribes, including particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) that have high disease prevalence.

Under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, authorities are conducting genetic profiling and tailored nutritional counseling, and offering education on marriage and prenatal health to reduce incidence. Screening of over 7.7 million individuals demonstrates the program’s scale.

The approach emphasises culturally sensitive outreach, with tribal health workers enlisted to support early presentation and manage complications. These efforts aim to minimize hospital admissions from anemia crises and support long-term public health equity.
