As of July 2025, Gujarat has identified 28,178 patients with sickle cell disease, ranking third in India behind Odisha and Madhya Pradesh. Around 90% are from Scheduled Tribes, including vulnerable tribal groups receiving genetic counseling and nutritional support under the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, which has screened 77 lakh individuals nationwide.
To address high disease burden, Gujarat is implementing genetic profiling programs, prenatal screening, and awareness drives tailored to tribal communities. These interventions aim to reduce disease complications and promote prevention strategies.
Public health authorities stress that targeted outreach and culturally appropriate counseling can help improve quality of life and reduce hospitalisations due to anemia crises and pain episodes.
