New Delhi, June 2025: A recent report by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has brought to light a concerning trend in India-almost a third of adults are dealing with unplanned pregnancies or cannot have as many children as they want.
According to the State of World Population Report 2025, 36% of Indian adults have experienced unintended pregnancies, and 30% say their actual number of children does not reflect their preference. Alarmingly, 23% face both situations, indicating deep-rooted issues in reproductive planning and healthcare access.
The report stresses that the problem is not India's declining fertility rate, but rather the lack of reproductive freedom. Social pressures, limited healthcare access, high costs of raising children, and job instability are pushing many couples to alter their family plans.
